Part of a collection of original photographic proof prints 'Chemises' taken by Malick Sidibe, 1964, and processes and printed by him in his studio in Bamako. Sidibé is considered one of the most important and influential photographers of the twentieth century, who is widely celebrated for his black-and-white studies of popular culture. His photographs were among the first to convey the atmosphere and vibrancy of the capital of Mali, during a time of immense cultural change. Highly sought after as a portrait photographer, Sidibé also photographed all the popular events and ceremonies in Mali. Often photographing parties late into the night, he would return to his studio to process and print his film so the partygoers could come by and place orders the following day.

These small proof prints 42 x 38.5cm were mounted onto coloured folders called chemises. Each piece has been set within a deep mount and presented in a handpainted frame, finished with museum grade glass.
