We love us some crisp tissue. Choose strong colours and use a couple of layers, otherwise it’s a little translucent and you might give away the surprise. Wrapping boxes and books and nice even rectangle shapes is easiest but don’t put everything into a nice, tidy container. It’s good to have something squashy, uneven and intriguing. If you can bear the fiddling, double sided tape will give you a crisper finish. You could also use contrasting washi tape for a more modern look.
Double layer your ribbon for maximum effect. We used a wider grosgrain ribbon (which I’ve always called Petersham but apparently Petersham has a scalloped edge and can be shaped with an iron and is very useful to milliners, and possibly less useful to those wrapping presents) as the base ribbon. We topped this with recycled satin in a contrasting colour. All tied up with a bow.
Welcome to our very happy world of Victorian decoupage. We have the perfect foil paper trims (foiled, embossed and diecut using original moulds from the 19th century) and coloured vintage illustrations to accessorise your gifts. Sheets of alphabets in gold or silver or floral designs will spell out your giftee’s name. Sheets of various roses, butterflies, flowers baskets (or dogs, for the canine loving mums) can be added as random, or orderly, decoration. We had a kaleidoscope (the collective noun, apparently) of butterflies, alighting on the present. These sheets aren’t sticky backed (it’s not Blue Peter) so you will have to glue them to the parcel. A gold foiled ‘Mother’ makes a charming gift tag but there are also packs of pretty tags if you want something more purposeful.
Needing more guidance? If you’ve got the sellotape and the tissue at the ready, we’ve put together a gift guide for Mother’s Day so you have the perfect present to wrap.
