The Background

Annings is a family run artisan soap maker, based on Dorset’s Jurassic coast since 2014, using a traditional cold production process. Cold process soap mixes fixed oils (most commonly olive and coconut oil) with an alkali (sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye). The result is a chemical process called saponification, where the composition of the oils change with the help of the lye to create a bar of soap. The advantage of this process is that the maker is free to customise the additional ingredients. Annings soaps are 100% natural (no artificial or synthetic products; no palm oil, parabens, phthalates or sls), and use a blend of seashells, herbs and essential oils to create each delicious fragrance. We have shampoo bar soaps and regular hand soaps. And yes, the name takes its inspiration from Mary Annings, the famous fossil palaeontologist from Lyme Regis, soon to be immortalised by Kate Winslet in the film ‘Ammonite’.

Why seashells?

Every year millions of tonnes of seashells are discarded by the fishing industry. Rather than see these unloved seashells go to waste, Annings have upcycled them into an eco-friendly material that forms the basis of their distinctive soap. The seashells are sourced from sustainable British scallop fisheries and, using a secret Annings method, are processed to harness their naturally restorative properties. This process helps to create a soap that is longer lasting, great for your skin and helps the environment. Upcycling seashells is part of the drive to combat the use of microplastics which contribute to ocean degradation. The soap packaging is also free from plastic (including the box and filler which they use to send the soap to us!).

The Fragrances

Bergamot and Sandalwood Shampoo Soap and Orange and Rosemary Shampoo Bar (woody and earthy and citrussy and herbaceous respectively and both with vitamin rich natural oils to nourish hair).
Highlights of the hand soaps include:
Geranium, Sage and Lime (A botanical fragrance that draws inspiration from a freshly watered English village garden. The herbaceous base of steam-distilled sage is expertly blended with a bouquet of geranium flower and Citrus aurantifolia peel essential oils to capture the midday sun and a tipple of lime. Yes please)
Neroli and Palmarosa (A distinctly floral and breezy aroma. The bitter orange peel and palmarosa essential oils capture an exhilarating violet bouquet that greets you like the spray of seawater).
Lemongrass and Grapefruit (The exotic zest of lemongrass and grapefruit essential oils creates a sensory mimosa that energizes and revitalises).
