We ask Eva Gernandt, the designer, ceramicist and brains behind beloved china brand By Mutti, what a Swedish Chistmas looks like.

How will you celebrate Christmas with your work colleagues this year?

We are just a few colleagues that will have a covid safe lunch, out at the surroundings close to the Old Porcelain Factory.

How do you celebrate with your family?

We will spend Christmas at my daughter’s house with her husband and my little grandchild Charlie. It is the first Christmas in their cosy house so we will implement our traditions there.

What do you eat for your celebratory Christmas meal?

We have slowly become vegetarians over the years so a lot of wonderful pies, cakes and home made candies. My daughter’s father in law is from England so they will absolutely cook the turkey on the 25th.

Are you using By Mutti to serve the food?

In my daughter’s house they will use the blue Wave plates for the dinner, and the platters and bowls. We also mix with my handmade ceramics.

How do you decorate the house?

I just made a big wreath for the door with all kinds of wild branches of blueberry, lingonberry, rose hip and spruce.
We put a lot of spruce in front of the door. We always have the big paper stars in the windows and of course the advent candle stick.

When does Father Christmas come? What is he called in Sweden? What does he bring?

He is called Jultomten. He can not come this year because little Charlie would be terrified.

Are there any particular traditions you enjoy?

I love the baking and the candy making. I love the day after Christmas, we celebrate Christmas the 24th, so on the 25th we love to relax and stay in our pyjamas the whole day.

Indoors or outdoors for the celebrations? What's the weather like?

Indoors with a fire.

What will you be drinking?

In Skandinavia we start with glögg, the sweet strong warm wine. For the smörgårdsbord, Schnapps and beer. With the main course we have wine, and for the dessert we have strong dessert wine.

Some of our favourite pieces are below but for our full selection of By Mutti china see the link below.
