Bordallo Pinheiro, a famous Portuguese satirical cartoonist in the late 19th century, was also an acclaimed ceramicist. Inspired by the shape of cabbage leaves, he designed this iconic tableware in 1884 which was manufactured in his own factory Fabrica de Faiancas das Caldas. It was met with immediate success. Since then the collection has been a key example of classic art deco design and important part of 19th Century Portuguese cultural heritage.
The cabbage leaf dishes are still cast in traditional molds and glazed by the hand of the artisans. In close collaboration with Bordallo’s workshop, new designs have been added including bowls and plates. This tableware can be used in both microwave and dishwasher.
