Snapshots: Fiona Woodcock

Award winning author and illustrator of absolutely charming kids' books 'Look' (which has just been awarded Best Children's Book in the World Illustration Awards), 'Hiding Heidi', 'Poppy and the Blooms' and brand new 'Hello' shares her top Instagram pics and gives us a glimpse into her beautiful world.

Fiona trained as a graphic designer, later working as an animator in film and TV. 'Look' (featuring double O sounds) was her first book idea, encouraging children to find the words within the pictures. 'Hello' is a summery celebration of double Ls, inspired by Coney Island.

Fiona will be celebrating the publication of 'Hello' with a reading, crafting and signing event for kids (and grownups) here on Saturday 29th June. This is a world first for this book! So be ready for a story at 11am.

'HELLO' is my latest picture book, it's a story told in double 'L' words. A brother and sister have a day out at a funfair by the sea, inspired by Coney Island and Dreamland in Margate.

This is me, I've got a thing about yellow and I had to get it into the new book seeing as it's one of the finest double 'L' words. 'Hello' opens with the line 'Hello yellow' as the sun rises and ends with 'Hello pillow'.

I went to the Bologna Children's Book Fair this year for the first time. So much inspiration from all around the world and a beautiful setting to catch up with publishers and friends.

Fiona Woodcock doodling at her desk!

I paid homage to David Hockney with this quick sketch after visiting the latest blockbuster exhibition. I often flick through my Hockney books for a fix of brilliance.

Inspired by a trip to New York. I had publisher meetings with the most distracting views - I've also got a bit of a thing about water towers.

I spend most of my time at this desk. All my artwork is created on paper using rubber stamps, cut stencils and children's blo pens, then composited digitally. I like the mix of having these two different stages to the process.

The page called

This was my first ever instagram post, created when a dodgy webcam crashed and froze, capturing the studio whilst I was working away, (oblivious to the fact that I'd left it on after a Skype call). I've tried to recreate the photo since, but I prefer this genuine moment of concentration.

This is a page from my debut book 'Hiding Heidi', a story that grew from my love of patterns. Floella Benjamin read it on CBeebies Bedtime Stories, which the young Play School watching Fiona would not have believed!

ZOOM is from 'LOOK', which is a story told in double 'O' words. Artwork from the book will be exhibited this July at Somerset House as part of the AOI World Illustration Awards, which is a huge honour.
