Favourite Fragrances for the Gifting Season

You should smell it in the shop. It’s amazing. A heavenly mash up of scented candles and perfumes and unguents (what a weird word) in the Beauty and Grooming Department. One day soon you will again breathe the fragranced air of The Hambledon in the real. In the meantime we’ve canvassed opinion here for top tips on the favourite fragrances in the building.

Victoria -

DS & Durga, Italian Citrus

Victoria only ever wears a citrus fragrance. Like she only ever wears jeans. Like she only ever orders a skinny cappuccino. Like she only ever writes with a Muji .38. She is not one for change. But she has switched up her cologne for this DS & Durga perfume: a bracing scent of coastal Italian citrus rinds-chinotto, blood orange, cold-pressed lemon and green mandarin with ambrette seed & clean musk. Unlike many eau de colognes, DS & Durga have varied the formula to create a citrus palette which last into the dry down (technical speak for when the perfume’s base notes take over). And it’s reminiscent of the Italian coast and, right now, that seems a very, very nice place to be.

Rob -

Austin Press, Farmer’s Garden

Rob lives in an apartment. It’s a nice apartment. It’s amply furnished with all manner of speakers and stereo and vinyl. But it is lacking in outdoor space. So Rob is using the power of smell to create a sense of what he’s missing. Austin Press Farmer’s Garden candle has a fragrance of cut grass, freshly turned soil, tiny flowers and herbaceous plantings, making Rob a veritable Monty Don in his virtual horticultural oasis. Austin Press candles are made with soy, coconut, & bee's wax and natural essential oils. They are packaged in recycled glass jars, with the press’s distinctive letter press packaging.

Lucy -

Maison Louis Marie, No.4

Lyme Regis can smell Lucy coming, and not in a bad way. On her once weekly, now somewhat intermittent, commute down to the Dorset coast, she travels in a mist of Maison Louis Marie no. 4. Also called Bois de Balincourt, the fragrance is named after the du Petit Thouars family home in France and the woods which surrounded the house. This romantic scent is Sandalwood and Cedarwood, supplemented by spicy Cinnamon Nutmeg with an earthy Vetiver. Lucy favours the eminently portable perfume oil but No. 4 is also available as an eau de parfum and candle.

Harriett -

Bon Parfumeur, 801

Harriett, whilst working incredibly hard (she’s here full time and then she goes home and puts in a solid shift with her knitting machine), dreams of holidays. She has chosen Bon Perfumer 801 to take her back to Cornwall. A powerful, aquatic citrus fragrance which blends grapefruit and lemon notes to evoke the marine freshness of sea spray. Bon Parfumeur suggest the fragrance takes us on a trip to Italy but Harriett is keeping closer to home.

Annie -

Maison Louis Marie, No. 5

In a former life Annie worked for Mac (not the computer kind, the make up kind). She remains very up to speed on the world of beauty. And she is a big fan of a spa. Maison Louis Marie’s No. 5 (also known as Kandilli, a small village set in the Asian bank of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, where Marie du Petit Thouar’s mother, Twinkie, experienced her first scent of a Tuberose flower. Keep up. There’ll be a test later) is a Tropical Tuberose fragrance with a White Lily background and a warm Sandalwood base. It is Annie’s home spa smell of choice. Available as a candle and perfume oil.

Jodie -

Poolside Fragrance

Another hard worker who dreams of foreign climes. Whilst Jodie may currently be putting in the hours in our extremely busy despatch department, in less seasonally adjusted times she is The Hambledon’s beach bum, spending her Summers in a wet suit in the surf in Cornwall. Mermaid’s Poolside perfume does as it promises: a fragrance of jasmine, suntan lotion, coconut and tangerine, evoking lazy afternoons in the sun. Yes please.
