Provenance - Sacre Coeur

Sacre Coeur is one of those Hambledon brands that sits just under the fashion radar, producing immaculate shirting season after season, with the minimum of fuss and fanfare. In an effort to redress this hiding of light under bushel, we dig a little deeper into their fabric filled world.

Introduction

Sacre Coeur was founded in 2016 by Julien Doligez as a satellite business, orbiting his family’s main company, AB Creations, who design and manufacture printed and woven textiles for some of fashion’s major brands. Julien, either because he is preternaturally modest or because he has signed an NDA with said big brands, keeps these collaborations confidential. Sacre Coeur draws on the decades of knowledge and experience of AB Creations in designing and producing the collections.

History

Sacre Coeur is based in Francheville, just outside France’s second city of Lyon: a fitting location for a textile business. In 1540 Francis I granted Lyon a monopoly on silk production in France and it became the thriving centre of the European silk trade. By the middle of the 17th Century over 14,000 silk looms were in use in the city. By the 19th century over half the area’s employment was derived from silk. Silk production was decimated by the French Revolution but experienced a resurgence during Napoleon’s reign and today remains a significant industry in the region.

The Ethos

In Julien’s words “The initial idea was to put value for money at the heart of the project”. Production is in Tunisia, working with one of AB’s manufacturing and outsourcing partners The financial costs of purely French production would be too high and the costs of production in the Far East, in terms of environmental impact, would be too great. Tunisia’s proximity to France supports Sacre Coeur’s commitment to more localised production.

The Styles

The brand specialises in shirting, exclusively shirting. The key characteristics are simple shapes, subtle woven textures, gentle colours and keen pricing. Shapes range from slim and fitted to boxy and oversized. Choose from fine woven cotton for layering basics (check out Flora) to soft viscose for more dressing up (Chloe is your friend) and boucle yarns (Kate) for signature statement jackets (shackets if you will).
