Provenance - HAY

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Hay, Denmarks favourite interiors brand, to The Hambledons Project Space. For the next couple of months, Hay will be creating a shop within a shop here in sunny Winchester and introducing lots of new products to their range in store. The pop up shop will be based on their Kitchen Market concept, launched globally at MoMA in New York. We are very excited to be in such rarified retailing company.

How did we find HAY?

We should have known the writing was on the wall. Way back in 2010 Lucy and I were on a buying trip to Copenhagen and killing time between appointments. Hay House (set over two floors of a spectacular building just behind Nikolaj Plads) proved an inspirational discovery. Laid out in part like an aspirational domestic home, in part like a spare and subtle department store and featuring furniture, objects and beautiful paintings, this felt like the very grown up version of lifestyle retail (and something to which we could aspire). A 10 year period of pondering, and waiting for a group of products which reflected both Hay's aesthetic and The Hambledon's particular sensibilities and we finally find ourselves Hay stockists.

What is HAY?

Founded in 2002 by Rolf and Mette Hay, Hay is committed to working with the best designers from all over the world; to nurture young design talent and to develop cutting edge technology and innovative research to create high quality products and to make them available to a wide audience. Everything Hay makes draws from three primary sources of inspiration: art, architecture and fashion.

What I admire about art is the unexpected, the originality; architecture is of course the context and the home of what we make, and fashion has a wonderful dynamism to it, reflecting the spirit of the time and whats happening right now. I would say that the best products we have done, they may exist somewhere in between these three environments, drawing from a little bit of everything.” — Rolf Hay

And it won't surprise you to know that Rolf and Mette are best friends with Ditte and Nicolaj Reffstrup, the founders of Ganni. Copenhagen is a very small and very creative place.

Unlike some other contemporary design and furniture brands, Hay has made accessibility a key factor in the business, not only in terms of price points but also the design concepts. As Mette says:

“Its not about turning a toothbrush into an art object to display in your living room,Mette explains, but about making quiet, ordinary moments a bit nicerthats the backbone of what we do.

What are our favourite pieces?

What an impossible question! We are all looking forward to reorganising our personal clutter and making full use of the iconic colour crates. Hay makes really joyful and distinctive use of colour, throughout the range, but the crates are particularly beautiful examples. If you have any impending birthday presents to consider, look no further than the boxed Tint glasses. The Splash vases are beautiful. You loved the Sowden tins. Time to get involved in the Sowden bottles and salt and pepper shakers. And reflecting Mettes intention to make ordinary moments nicer, who can resist a Leo sponge for doing the washing up?
