Mens Fabric Guide: Autumn/Winter '21

The Autumn/Winter fashion season is all about fabrics and we've got some absolute gems in the menswear department this year. So sit back, relax and read through this guide which gives you an overview of the key fabrics for this season.

Named after super cozy sheep fur, fleece is actually a synthetic product, made from polyester. Nowadays the raw material for synthetic fleece is typically recycled plastic bottles. Once woven the fabric is brushed to give it volume. It is warm, durable, breathable, fast drying and moisture resistant making it perfect for extreme weather conditions. In the early 80s Patagonia were one of the first company's to see the potential of the fabric, launching with first generation fleece, Synchilla.

Boiled Wool

Woven wool is fulled (which means boiled and agitated in hot water) to shrink and compress the fibres. This results in a denser fabric (about 25-50% smaller than its source material) which is ideally suited to jackets and lighter weight outerwear.

Made from the soft wool of the Angora goat (not to be confused with Angora wool), mohair is characterised by its softness, strength and sheen, and as a result is known as 'diamond fibre'. It is also highly resistant to felting (but please don't test this on a hot wash) and takes dye extremely well. Like natural wool, it is water repellant and insulating.

Lambswool, as the name suggests, is wool from the first shearing of the cute baby sheep (at around 7 months old). Consequently it is super soft and fine and requires very little processing.

This season's favoured fabric, corduroy (a woven ridged fabric, with the weft cut into cords or wales) is soft and durable and reminiscent of 50s Ivy leaguers, early 70s beatniks and the British landed classes. Find feather cord, needle cord, jumbo cord, elephant cord: take your pick.

Technical Fabrics

Alphadry, Primaloft, Gore-Tex

Don't Google Alphadry. This is most definitely not an incontinence catheter. This Alphadry is Nanamica's very own light weight, quick drying, crease resistant, high quality polyester fabric. Primaloft is a synthetic down, used as insulation: water repellant, cozy, extremely packable and even machine washable. Gore-Tex is a waterproof breathable membrane (patented by WL Gore & Associates).

With its origins in US army innovations during WWII, ripstop is a distinctive woven fabric with a regular cross hatch weave which, as the name suggests, stops rips.

Brushed Cotton

Woven cotton, which is usually singed to create a smooth surface, is, in this case, mechanically brushed to create soft fibres on the surface of the fabric, creating a super soft handle.
