Department Tour - Kids

Bish. Bash. Crash. Pfft. Pop. Twang. Tinkle. Clack. Click. Woof. Bosh. Slam.

We’re not venturing into the world of ASMR, these are the happy sounds of the Kids’ Department in full swing.

Wooden Toys

Brand spanking new, from sunny Barcelona, Me & Mine make beautiful traditional wooden toys and games from sustainable beech trees painted in delicious colours with eco paint. Lest you feel this is all a little worthy, please remember that these are properly fun: the skittles can make for noisy, furious competition; the catapults are equipped with fluffy pom pom ammunition; and who doesn’t love a yoyo and a ball in cup game. If this all sounds a bit physical, try Charlie, the sausage dog pull along.

Pocket Money Finds

Sometimes you just have to spend a moment up on the Womenswear or down on the Menswear floor having a little browse, taking time for a wee try on. For a small cash incentive, every child can scavenge the pocket money cupboard and find some treats. We generally find warfare, stealth and the great outdoors hit the spot: weaponry in the form of a water pistol; secret messages a-plenty with the spy pen (please don’t ask what hidden memos were found a few weeks ago, invisibly inscribed on some shelving in the shop. Let’s just say that the phrase may have begun with the F word and ended with Off and that possibly the parents of the child in question were not best pleased. We chuckled. But we’re neither strict disciplinarians nor responsible adults); camping accoutrements in the form of head torch and folding cutlery.

Bathtime

All sorts of bath time treats. For the Francophile sophisticate, Minois products are made in the South of France, using mild formulas and exclusively natural and organic ingredients (orange blossom, calendula, honey, sweet almond oil and shea butter). They can be used from birth onwards and the scent definitely has a whiff of sweet, clean baby skin which we love. Mermaid fizzers and bunny lip balms are perfect for satisfying your 5 year old’s inner teenager.

Story Time

We have been scouring every publisher’s catalogue to bring you the current line up of Kids’ books. It’s an eclectic list based on funny stories, beautiful illustrations and a hint of nostalgia. We love ‘Great Dog’, a puppy and his dad discuss his future while looking at other Great Dogs in their family. Will he be a marathon runner like Uncle Tibor, the fastest dog in the family? An astronaut like Aunt Yuki? Or maybe a teacher like Uncle Scooter? We love ‘Lenny the Lobster Can't Stay for Dinner’. Or can he? You decide the ending of this tale of a distinguished lobster and a fateful dinner party. We love ‘Banksy Graffitied Walls And Wasn’t Sorry’, a biography of the artist for 4-7 year olds.

Making and Gaming

Nope. Absolutely not that kind of gaming. We are very much all about analogue play. If you are one of the three people who don’t already own Poo Bingo, now’s your chance. This is every kid’s game of choice. For the dog lovers, get involved in Dog Domino, Best in Show cards and puzzles and Do You Look Like Your Dog pairs. If you’re inspired by Tom Daley’s crafting shenanigans poolside at the Olympics, it’s embroidery kits, French knitting sets and building your own robot.

Baby baby

Has there been something of a lockdown baby boom? Gifts galore for new additions to the family. Cutest animal rattles and toys from Oyoy; cutest muslins and bibs from Rose in April; cutest weekend and washbags, which will most certainly have to be purloined by parents as far too glamorous, and large, for the babies.

Department tour over. Perfect presents this way.
