How We're Looking for Autumn - Homeware at The Hambledon

Or what we like to call Pre Fall. We can tolerate this Americanism as it sounds a mite less chilly and dark than the full English Autumn word. And Homeware at The Hambledon for this season is anything but chilly and dark. Step this way for colour and flowers and cheer and new. Just all the good things.

The Story

As we move towards Autumn we’re dialling down the full sunshine vibes. We were feeling a need
for elegance and restraint but didn’t want to compromise on the joy. Taking a dash of inspiration
from New York’s finest, John Derian, and his collection of Victorian ephemera and
penchant for abundant fresh flowers, we’re keeping things sophisticated but not too slick. Every
home should embrace a touch of the scruffy.

The Main Table

Without wishing to trumpet any single thing, may I just say that we are beyond delighted to
welcome Mosser Glass back to the building. We first sold Mosser way back when. Long before
Martha Stewart’s IRS shenanigans, when Lucy and I were the ultimate MS Living fan girls, we
followed Martha’s burgeoning jadeite glass collection with fascination, admiration and not a little
envy. Importing Mosser Glass from The States was us scratching the moulded glass itch.
Following the closure of lots of glass factories in Ohio after the war, Mr Mosser Snr (the company
is still very much family owned) collected moulds from moribund manufacturers and started his
own glass production based on vintage designs. Get your fix of Jade, Georgia
Blue, Classic Milk and Marble right here.

The Enfilade

Or dresser base or buffet if you will is home for our latest Homeware import, OVO Things, fresh from Lithuania. This is the very first time the country has featured as a sourcing location for The Hambledon. We love the beautiful beeswax birthday candles, the super dainty slim candles and the black and white prints. For any skiers or Francophiles out there, your favourite mountain pastries ‘canelés’ (a sort of baked custard flavoured with rum and vanilla and cooked in a striated cylindrical mould) are here rendered as little candleholders in shiny brass and white ceramic. The photographic botanical prints celebrate nature’s finest with roses, herbs and vegetables.

The Main Run

The full story made flesh. Check out the Otterbourne glass candlesticks to get some soft colour. Perennial favourites Vintage List, Pearl China and Pearl Glassware provide some necessary calm and elegance. We love our new cookbook Wild Sweetness by Thalia Ho, full of recipes for sweet things inspired by the wild (and for the superficial amongst us, it has a very pretty cover). And if lockdown hasn’t saturated your puzzle fixation, get involved in a John Derian jigsaw.

The Flowers

As the garden turns, foraging comes to the fore. Mix your garden’s late blooms (hydrangeas, echinacea, cosmos, the last flush roses and dahlias) with the bounty of the hedgerows. We’ve mixed ripening blackberries, elderberries and oak leaves into our seasonal bouquets. And, at the risk of being repetitious, might we suggest some Mosser Glass vessels for your flowers. We love the Panel Pitcher for drama and the Panel Tumblers and Ice Tea Tumbler for smaller posies.
