How to Lay a Table for Spring

Once upon a time we used to lay a table to entertain our friends and family. These days (but not for very much longer, hurray and hurrah) we are making the most of more intimate bubbled gatherings. Check out our Spring table to mark the new season. Scale up for much larger parties as, and when, required.

The Inspiration

It’s rare that cabbage is the inspiration for anything (with sincere apologies to Colcannon lovers and Choucroute devotees everywhere) but this overlooked vegetable is getting its well deserved moment in the sun and is the focus for our newest table laying excursion. Inspired by Victorian Spode and vintage Wedgwood from the 1940s, our latest range of tableware is a celebration of all things cabbage. As a little amuse bouche on the side, pay particular attention to the soundtrack for the video. There aren’t many cabbage songs but Sim has unearthed an absolute cracker.

We love, love to layer (and not just in fashion) and the cabbage tableware benefits from a bit of contrast. We’re mixing it with our Pearl White china. So a stack of dinner plate (Bordallo), dinner plate (Pearl white), dessert plate (Bordallo) and topped with a bowl (Bordallo). We used a salt bowl at each place (these are perfect either as pinch pots or little butter plates) because they look very cute. Dont worry about laying for every single course before youve even begun to think about sitting down. This table is about a bit of theatre and not a little showing off. You can remove the bowls to hurry them into the kitchen once your guests have seen your beautiful work.

We will (at some point, when the delivery isn’t stuck in a UPS hub in Wolverhampton) be accessorising with some cotton block print napkins from Bungalow. These will be lovely soft green botanical inspired prints to sit with our china. Unfortunately at the moment you will have to imagine their beauty. For today softness is provided by Braided Rug table runners, giving a subtle range of colour to counter all the green. Feel free to use multiple runners across the full length of the table. It’s a good way to break up the place settings.

Even in Spring, candlelight is a non-negotiable for a pretty table. We have customised a new set of Bougies la Francaise candles (called Summer) in seasonally appropriate shades. If you fancy something more striking, pick a single colour. Pair with simple, and low, enamel candlesticks. All the better to see across the table at your opposing number. Lord knows, we’re going to want to chat chat chat.

The Decoration

It’s most definitely the beginning of Spring but it can still be quite difficult to find enough, and enough various, flowers. Garden hellebores strike the perfect note of optimism and subtlety (daffodils do tend to bash you over the head with their yellowness). And if our wall of cabbage seems like vegetable overkill, feel free to make your own seasonal display. Perhaps a fresh greenery wreath?
