How to Have a Get Together with the Girls

Weve all really, really missed our friends. Heres our guide to making the most of a Girls(or what we call Womens) Get Together.

The Starting Point

We have taken inspiration from our new best friend, Skye McAlpine (shes not our actual friend, mores the pity). She looks like she knows how to host a perfect do: relaxed but beautiful; friendly but not too crazy; delicious cooking but not at all show offy. She also seems to know a lot of very interesting people so we are living a little vicariously with this one and imagining a gathering chez McAlpine (probably in London but her Venice apartment does sound quite appealing). Were probably in the garden (unless were in a bubble with our best girlfriends) so lets think about staying warm (wearing the perfect clothes for the occasion and just staying the right side of cosy inebriation). Weve got the dress code sorted, handy hints for easy food and cute party favours.

The Invitations

Even if you make the plans by text or Whats App, there is something so lovely about a personalised handwritten invitation sent by post. Petra Boase, one of our very favourite stationers, has a simple and characteristically jolly pack. Check out Caroline Kents Scribble & Daub for a luxe, handpainted version (sparklers). Caroline is the Queen of Traditional Correspondence.

The Dress Code

It has been a long old time since we had an excuse to dress up. Sophisticated and pretty florals are the order of the day, perfectly suited to a garden gathering, easy to layer with knitwear and great with chunky boots. Spring Summer 21 has seen flowers make their perennial runway appearances (Dior did a lovely line in a bloom based bralette, Dolce and Gabbana took floral to the literal max with floor skimming patchwork maxi dress). Were a little more practical but every single bit as pretty.

Annie has put together some mix and match pairs for keeping you pretty and pretty warm.

What's for Supper?

Chanelling our new BFF and her exhortation to make:

The kind of food you can plonk down in the centre of the table for everyone to tuck into, towering platefuls of it, higgledy-piggledy, unpretentious, colourful and overflowing.

This sounds like just the right kind of meal. Check out her amazing recipes in A Table for Friendswhich strikes the perfect balance for just this kind of occasion. Were cooking a chicory salad, saffron cous cous and a roast chicken. For dessert were having Coffee Mascarpone Biscuit Cake. Please. And if youre plonking down platefuls, make sure you lay a pretty table for your guests with jugfuls of flowers (Falcon, Vaisselle), and jugfuls of booze and plenty of mismatched china, glassware and linen. Were favouring Van Verre, Granada Ceramics and Pearl China with some Fog Linen and pretty pink Colombia Collective placemats. Just keep the colours vibrant.

Party Favours

Perhaps this period of lockdown has left us feeling nostalgic for simpler times. Like childhood birthdays with party bags. Time to resurrect the tradition with a little gift for your guests? A party favour at each place to celebrate your reunion. We like a Bon Bon soap. We like a cheeky nail varnish. We like a little bundle of candles. We like a bar of chocolate.

Happy Gathering

Have an absolutely lovely, lovely time entertaining with your nearest and dearest. May the occasion be happy and sunny and warm. Anything you need (excepting the wine), this way.
