Focus On: Imogen Owen

In honour of the much awaited arrival (re-arrival if you will) of our very favourite sweary mugs, we thought it might be a nice idea to recap on the life and many talents of their creator, the lovely Imogen Owen.

The Meet Cute

Possibly we met Immie for the first time at a trade show (in the dim and distant pre-Covid times, retailers and designers and manufacturers used to gather together in great big halls to show and tell about exciting new things. Much business used to be done and much fun used to be had). Possibly Immie was a little the worse for wear on this occasion after a night on the tiles. Possibly she was wearing a striped Breton top and bright red lipstick. Possibly she was smelling particularly fragrant (for it was she who introduced us to the wonderful world of Maison Louis Marie) and possibly she was swearing. All these things made us want to be her friend.

Training and Skill

Having trained as a graphic designer at Camberwell School of Art, Imogen is now based in rural Leicestershire, working out of a barn studio (which sounds suitably glamorous) and printing on her beloved 1940s Autovic letterpress. She started her eponymous stationery brand in 2013, launching at Top Drawer in London with a range of wedding stationery. She immediately picked up a number of high profile stockists with her zeitgeist calligraphy, which manages to combine humour, prettiness and ineffable skill, and the business has grown from there. As well as teaching at De Montfort University, she is also known for teaching the UK's first Modern Calligraphy workshops back in the beginning of 2014 and has since passed on her knowledge to thousands of people across the UK. We’re also loving her calligraphic collaborations with brands like Chanel, Monica Vinader and Charlotte Tilbury. We like a little touch of the high life.

The Sweary Mugs

Never has so much swearing been so beautifully executed as Imogen’s calligraphic swearathon in the shop that marked the publication of her book ‘Modern Calligraphy Workshop’. Instead of a traditional book signing (yawn, yawn), we invited anyone and everyone to bring in their favourite cusses and swears which Imogen beautifully rendered on prettiest pastel cards in her very best curly whirly writing. Whilst we can’t relive those heady days, the sweary mugs give a gold leafed taste of her very particular style, and make a perfect, perfect present. And if you can’t run to a mug, look out for her very special cards. And they’re not all about swearing. Turns out Immie is also a super talented illustrator with a knack for a degree of cute without resorting to the mawkish.

This is a woman very much on our absolute wavelength. Check out all her beautiful things below:
