Christmas at The Hambledon

Welcome to Christmas at Green Knowe: a traditional English Christmas in an ancient manor house, lovingly created by our very own Lucy and Harriett.

The Story

'The clock went tick-tock, and in the stillness he heard little bare feet running across the floor, then laughter and whispering, and a sound like the pages of a big book being turned over.' L.M Boston

This is Christmas 19 at The Hambledon. Following on from our Autumn theme of The House at Green Knowe books, this is Christmas at Green Knowe, inspired by the books of Lucy Boston. We are all about candlelight, garden foraged greenery, woodland animals, berries and fruits and dusty metals. This is the festive season in an ancient English manor house, inhabited by friendly ghosts from the past. The book, set in the fictional Green Knowe, is based on LM Boston's childhood home, The Manor at Hemingford Grey. Built in 1130, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in the country.

The Tree Decorations

There are lots of lovely things about working in retail, not least of them is choosing Christmas decorations. Armed with our Lucy's very clear brief based on the other Lucy's books, we knew what we were trying to achieve: the sense of a Christmas of years of accumulated treasures, gathered over a lifetime. We're very happy to be referencing Hemingford Grey's extensive and beautiful gardens, featuring secret paths and elaborate topiary. Expect to find pheasants, field mice and deer nestling in the shop. Mushrooms (paper and glass), Christmas trees (paper and tinsel), metallic holly and clusters of silver and gold pine cones are the botanicals. And never fear, your very favourite, borderline tasteless, eminently kitsch selection (snow cones, pastel rainbows and retro deer anyone?) is here too.

Decorating the House

Taking our cue from simple, old English style, we are encouraging you to decorate your house with natural foliage accessorised with a few (or an enormous quantity of) choice, and very beautiful, extras. Please use the Victorian inspired tinsel trees as table decorations. Please fill bowls with glass bauble fruit. Please use any number and variety of silver wreaths on the walls and doors. Please hang stems of silver holly or boughs of gold mistletoe overhead (lots of kissing opportunities. This stuff is everlasting). Please embrace candelight with a gold advent candleholder (loosely woven with a little natural greenery if you will). And for strings of Christmas lights, these leafy beauties are your very best friend.

The Niches

You can't keep Lucy and Harriett down. They are the Christmas dream team, and quite possibly theatre designers manque (think it should be manquees, answers on a postcard please). Each of our wooden crates, which were cluttering up the basement stockroom and causing a dangerous tripping hazard, have been beautifully repurposed. Each box now tells a different festive story. What will yours be? Are you a simple fruity number? The Beluga Whale and the Polar Bear? The Kitsch Deer in a forest of pink? The Kitsch Deer in a forest of green? The Pheasant and the Holly? The Deer and the Lametta Tinsel (this is one of my favourites, it's a little bit trad and a little bit disco)?

Happy Christmas
