The Cameron Bespolka Trust

We have a very lovely customer, Corinne, who runs a very lovely charity. We wanted to help raise awareness for the charity and we wanted to devise a lovely window to showcase the birdboxes, which are made as part of her fundraising. Read all about it.

The Charity

The Cameron Bespolka Trust was set up in memory of Corinne's son, Cameron. He loved nature. He photographed it, blogged about it, surveyed it and immersed himself in it. Bird-watching was a major part of his life. The aim of the Trust is to develop and sponsor outdoor events and activities for young people to help them discover the same passion for all things wild and natural. The Trust has a particular aim to try to reach those children who wouldn't necessarily have access to this kind of experience. They work with organisations, across the UK and the States, involved in the protection and promotion of the natural world to ensure that their work with children is relevant and valuable. Their latest project is Cameron's Cottage, developed in partnership with the RSPB, to renovate a derelict cottage in the New Forest as a focus for nature based activities.

The Idea

Corinne approached The Hambledon and asked if we would consider doing some kind of project to raise awareness of the charity. As part of its fundraising activities, the Trust had commissioned the Minstead Trust, a Hampshire charity supporting people with learning disabilities, to build Bird Houses. We thought that a shop window celebrating the charity, the Bird House and the natural world might be the perfect vehicle. Step forward Harriett, our resident VM expert and Duncan Burgess, a very helpful local landscaper and his haul of silver birches.

The Window

As you can imagine with 10 foot tree trunks, there was a fair amount of wrangling. Lara, who came to work here a couple of weeks ago, expecting a quiet little shop job, found herself working for the central Winchester equivalent of the Forestry Commission. Rob, not known for his horticultural expertise, was on hand with the secateurs for some careful trimming. And Harriett wielded the string, a handy saw and some strong nails. No. 10 The Square is now a woodland idyll, featuring the Bird Houses, some silver birches and beautiful Epice scarves and Bellerose menswear

The Bird House

A bird house provides a safe haven for birds to raise their young, as there are fewer natural holes in our gardens. The bird house on the trees at The Hambledon is suitable for coal tits, blue tits, great tits, nuthatches, house sparrows and other small birds. It's made from untreated recycled timber with a recycled slate roof (which unscrews for easy cleaning). There is a 32mm plate fitted around the entrance hold to protect the nest from predators. We have some available for sale (in store only £18) or they're on The Cameron Bespolka Trust website
