Bellerose Spring 21

Can it really be possible? Almost a year ago we worked with Bellerose on their shop within a shop in the Project Space at The Hambledon. This season the brand takes its place back on the First Floor and it is yet another tip top collection from our very favourite Belgians.

The Background

Bellerose are Belgian. The label started with a line of men's shirts in 1989; womenswear launched in 1998; kids and a flagship store opened in 2002. They now have over 20 immaculately designed shops throughout Northern Europe as well as a thriving wholesale business. American preppie references, which inspired the first shirting collection 30 years ago, remain a constant. But, partly because of their geographical location in Brussels, only a few hours from Amsterdam, London, Paris and Cologne, their inspirations are delightfully diverse. Bellerose are fashion’s magpies.

The Inspiration

Bellerose doesn’t blindly follow trends. In the words of their creative director, Derek van Heurck:

“For example, inspiration can be found in the colors of a flower bouquet that work well together, or an old lady on the metro that moves in a certain way...We have a tendency to work like a lone pair of electrons, and the complexity of Bellerose is finding the tie that binds all 4 collections. Somehow though, it’s always found. This red line that runs throughout all collections implicates fabrics, prints and colours alike. The theme of a collection often starts with something as small as a print or a picture or as big as an era or a movement – the colors are then determined in function of this theme.”

We’re not sure who the painter is for Spring 21. Or what the movement might be but it is drawn together by the most beautiful colour palette, as evidenced in the lovely Edia bag.

The Collection: Spring 21

There are so, so many pieces to choose from. Everything sort of goes with everything else. Please feel free to layer to your heart’s content. We love the Howland shirt in a chrome yellow broderie anglaise. We love it with the Doswy knit in Ecru (but also in Aqua). Bellerose classics Stoemp and Loud Jackets are revisisted in new fabrications. And if you’re feeling a slightly hippier vibe, look no further than the lovely Ink shirts. Cutest knit prize goes to the floral embellished Dateul.
