Inspiration

A somewhat unlikely trip to a kids’ fashion show in Paris, where Victoria was talking about shopkeeping to a teeny tiny audience of people, who were mostly just trying to keep out of the sun during the French heatwave. But it was the perfect opportunity to look at some fresh things and we’ve stumbled on a lovely new avenue for The Hambledon. So much cute stuff for cute little people that we’ve somehow managed to overlook until now.

Prepping the Nursery

Once you’ve chosen the cot and painted the walls white, you only have the fun stuff to think about. With a background in textile design and children’s book illustration and as a mother of three, Petra Boase is well placed to provide some art for the space. We love her circus themed risograph prints. Buy singly or as a set for some jolly impact. Choose Meri Meri alphabet letters (are there any other kind of letters?) to spell out children’s names (and cheesy sentiments if you’re into that kind of thing). Keep the room super tidy with storage baskets from Maison Bengal for all manner of baby clutter. And line the crib with a cotton Rose in April blanket.

Bathtime

Turns out babies need their own skincare regime. Turns out that Minois from France have entirely addressed this need. Made in the South of France, all the products have been developed using supremely mild formulas and exclusively natural and organic ingredients: orange blossom, calendula, honey, sweet almond oil and shea butter. They contain no parabens, phenoxyethanol, sulphates, silicone or dye and they can be used from birth onwards. Turns out you may make the initial purchase for a baby but you will be coming back for yourself. Post bath, swaddle in La Cerise sur le Gateau towels. 100% cotton, 100% lovely.

Going out or staying in?

Everyone knows a baby generates enormous amounts of clobber. It is very difficult to travel light. We have all sorts of travel bags, baby bags, changing bags, holdalls, bowling bags, backpacks and totes. Some are purpose built for babies, others just lend themselves to the task. There's nothing cuter than the Rose in April Charlotte bag in pink with the fawn print. But if you're feeling more like a grown up, choose their Romy weekend bag with slightly more adult polka dots. And if you want a light, sling over the shoulder, ready to roll kind of thing, Monk & Anna have just delivered more Kyodaina shoppers.

Books & Gifts

There's something really special about giving a baby a book. The lovely Fiona Woodcock launched her brand new, award winning 'Hello' with a special reading in store a couple of weeks ago. It garnered lots of fans amongst our audience of pre schoolers: lots of pictures and just a few words. 'This Clumsy Monster' and 'Helping Hen' are beautifully designed board books (although I always find a board book is more of a teething aid). The Rose in April baby muslins might just be the sweetest thing in store ATM. Illustrated with fawns, starfish, foxes, crocodiles and tigers, these are the perfect, easy peasy present. And we cannot forget about the rather charming Inuwet lip balms, which are cruelty free and safe to use from any age. Younger children will love them.

Welcome to the World

Don't forget to send a card: congratulations, well done, good thing, you're brilliant and all the positive messages. We have a crazy selection of silly/heartfelt/cheeky/charming cards to welcome a newborn.
